Being a Kainos Prison Volunteer
Prison volunteers work under the supervision of the Kainos Programme Manager. They are subject to the boundaries of prison visiting regulations, security clearance and approval by the Prison Service.
Purpose
Prisoners can chat about anything they like over coffee or games. Volunteer prison visitors are aged 25-75 and come from a variety of backgrounds. They also facilitate discussion groups at workshops and even run some offending behaviour courses.
Volunteers:
visiting prisoners weekly, supporting prisoners in their challenge to change.
Initial reaction
I had become increasingly aware of the work of Kainos through a number of friends who spoke of their role as volunteers. Upon being invited to become involved I was initially hesitant, however without doubt it is one of the best things that I have ever been involved with.
My only regret was that I had not done this earlier
A year ago I went to my first Social Development Evening. Driving home afterwards, my only regret was that I had not attended years before. Each week there is always a warm welcome awaiting the volunteers and finding topics of conversation is never a problem. It is a privilege to be able to discuss matters ranging from soccer and the wonders of outer space to bottle collecting and holidays in Mongolia!

Table discussion groups
Volunteers sit at the tables and talk with the men in their discussion groups. Here the participants are preparing posters to demonstrate what their talks have been about. Volunteers are really appreciated by all for their time and commitment to the programme and to the guys
