Focus Workshop

Participants learn through the course that being aware of their own thinking, self-talk and comfort zones, they can positively motivate themselves forward and learn to set goals to keep them thinking in a positive direction rather than dwelling on what they don't want. Underlying the whole course is the development of self-esteem, or the appraisal of oneself. As participants learn the importance of feeling better about themselves, this encourages them to think ahead. The FOCUS intervention provides the participants with a 'mental tool kit' designed to help them in all areas of their lives.

Self improvement
Focus is a progressive course, starting with a look at individual beliefs, and how these affect their behaviour. By helping participants to understand how they regulate their behaviour according to their beliefs, this gives a starting point for each individual to look at where they came from and to work with them to decide where they are going. The participants also develop knowledge of how their own thinking and ‘self - talk' keeps either negative or positive behaviour ongoing. Knowing how to develop the confidence to think forward effectively rather than think back negatively, motivates change in everyone. Goal setting (or planning) for a life outside of prison is an essential ingredient of FOCUS and gives the participants ample opportunity to discuss their personal fears and concerns and put into place their strategic plans to prepare for release.

The course consists of 8 sessions that explore the following areas:
Knowing yourself - Aims of the course.  Questionnaire about Focus.

Understanding our thinking - Exploring why we think the way we do.

Looking at ourselves - Exploring behavioural patterns and how our self -image plays a part in behaviour.

Comfort walls - Looking at how people protect themselves emotionally.

Motivation & choices - Different types of motivation and the way choices affect our lives.

Where do I want to go? - Exploring how our thinking steers our lives for better or worse.

How can I change - Looking at possible ways of change through personal affirmations.

Keeping focused - Different ways of setting realistic goals for the future.
