Becoming a volunteer prison visitor with
Kainos Community:

'Volunteers give a listening ear to prisoners, they offer a wider perspective of life outside the prison walls and provide participants with the opportunity to understand the views of others in the context of their own lives. The commitment shown by the volunteers to visit every week enables the participants to gain confidence in building an ongoing relationship which provides a valuable tool in the development of social and communication skills required for release.
There are a number of ways in which volunteers can help. As well as supporting the participants in their ‘Challenge to Change’ volunteers can, if they wish be involved in a number activities throughout the year including the family, and community days or even facilitating courses

Volunteers as well as staff play an important role in the programme.

Training:
Existing prison volunteers may recommend any person from the surrounding community. Also, they must be recommended by another known contact (i.e. Vicar). Comprehensive regular training includes various security and relational aspects of their role. There are extensive supervision and safety rules in place. They then sign a document stating that they have been trained and understand prison rules, regulations and requirements of their role in the Kainos Programme. Being a volunteer is a rewarding experience, many who attend our social evenings and other events continue year after year.
