One of the prisoners commented that, in the past he found it difficult to communicate with people who were not criminally motivated, but now as a result of the interaction with volunteers on the programme it has made a big difference to his communication skills and his perception of ‘straight’ people (not with a criminal mind). He now saw them as people like him and not as potential targets.
A strong community feel
It is not only the prisoners who have benefited from the Programme. Prison staff also notice the positive effects the programme has and the strong community feel that has developed between staff and prisoners. As one officer said, “Prisoners are able to speak openly about their lives and troubles inside and outside of prison. This had an impact on them becoming more confident and mature in preparing for a better way life on release that would not lead them back into prison”.
There have been some staffing changes in the last year. At the Verne Steve Clay has been promoted to Programme Manager, he has done a fantastic job in continuing to develop and move the programme forward, and Christine Ballard has taken up the post of Assistant Manager.
A large portion of my time has been taken up in helping with the accreditation of the programme and making plans and preparations to open a wing at Stocken prison which became operational in the autumn of 2006.
