Community Living Course
The purpose of this Intervention is to introduce the participants to the key ethos and concepts of the Kainos Community. Each module is split into different sessions each considering a core concept.
Community Living - Introduction. Aims of the course. Origins of Kainos, Setting boundaries. Motivational interviewing. Functioning in community - Defining citizenship within a community. Developing group development through discussion of moral issues. Understanding of prison as being removal from society. Considering re-integration into society. Attitude to authority - Considering the need for authority. Considering unhealthy attitudes to authority. Dealing with conflict - To consider the area of conflict. Learn the different types of conflict. Distinguish between conflict & confrontation. Perspective taking - Introduction to the concept of taking a different perspective. Awareness of pre-conceived ideas. The dangers of labeling. To develop a more open mind to situations. Communication skills - Understanding communication skills. To develop positive communication skills. Understanding the relationship of trust in developing communication skills. Developing Self -Awareness. Accountability & responsibility - To understand accountability. To understand responsibility. Awareness of the consequences of behaviour.
Session one introduces fundamental community concepts which are vital as part of the induction of new residents to the Challenge to Change Programme. Individual members of the community must understand that by committing themselves to a programme of change they are undertaking to be an active member of a therapeutic process where each member of the community can affect others in a positive way by choosing to engage in the community process. Participants are encouraged to realise that a key component of change within the programme is the community as a therapeutic 'tool'. Participants have the opportunity to try new ways of behaving and should be mutually supporting other members to achieve the same goal, which is ultimately the -'’The Challenge to Change'. Other sessions begin to develop key community themes around participants being re-integrated back into the wider community. Key themes are repeated in later modules to reinforce the concepts to participants. Tutors are encouraged to develop group cohesion. Sessions involve differing processes and mixed-modalities of delivery methods to communicate key-concepts (including role-plays, didactic delivery, group exercises and brainstorming). Tutors are encouraged to utilise participants to be involved in the delivery of sessions as appropriate. By introducing use of peer ‘role-models' participants should develop greater self- confidence and belief in the processes of change. The course consists of 7 sessions that explore the following areas:
