News from The Verne
I joined the Kainos Community on 1 August 2005 from the uniform side of the Prison Service; my main reason was that I wanted to be a part of a team that was really making a difference to prisoners, their families and their future.
Very quickly I realised I had made the right decision; watching the change of attitude and maturing of coping mechanisms were very obvious, as we deliver the Kainos ‘Challenge to Change’ Offending Behaviour Programme to our participants who are also our residents in a unique community of 72 men.
Owned by the men
The community is unique in that it is “owned” by the residents, with mentors and a council of members made up from within, they have pride in their community and they are active in how it is run and perceived by visitors to whom they are proud to show around and discuss the skills they have achieved.
We have had quite a few official visitors to the community and like me they are impressed by the ownership of the residents, the sorting out of minor problems, (before they become major) that you get with 72 men living together in 8 man dormitories. The cleanliness and welcome onto the wing and the atmosphere of daily life here is always remarked upon by visitors.
In delivery of our programme in the classroom, the challenge to life long ideals and beliefs are a struggle to turn around but it is a joy to see the penny drop and the richness of cultures and variety of ideas in discussion groups never ceases to amaze me.

The programme is varied and there has been some very hard work put in by the residents in conjunction with our faithful band of volunteers who come in week by week for Social Development Evenings/Weekends and also Community Days which are also very successful as this involves the resident’s families for a whole day of family unity, renewing ties between dad’s and children, with the help of (as always) Uniform Staff, Probation, Chaplaincy and volunteers as well as Kainos staff all with the kind permission of our Governor Mrs Denise Hodder.
Yes it was a good decision to join the Kainos Community at The Verne, a Challenge to Change for all involved.
