Citizenship
In this intervention participants explore their role as seniour residents of the community and the need to be active ‘positive role-models'. At the same time this module is an opportunity to introduce re-integration with society as an active theme.
The theme of citizenship for participants has two perspectives, inside of the Kainos Community/Prison and outside in the wider community. The developing sessions consider both perspectives in delivery of the module material
Consideration of scenarios both inside and outside of prison can help to develop thinking skills through challenging preconceived ideas and judgments made within a group setting. Involvement of ideas and judgments of other group members is therefore essential through these sessions with tutors recapping and reflecting upon the points raised.
Finally a session is included which introduces group members to the challenge of re-integration to society. This is designed as an introductory session offering basic information. Whilst Kainos staff can assist in helping Kainos members in such areas it is important to encourage participants to take responsibility for their own pre-release plans and liaise with the appropriate departments.
The course consists of 6 sessions that explore the following areas:
Democracy - Understanding a democratic process. Understanding of democracy. Awareness of alternative forms of government. Democratic process in Kainos. Appreciating authority
Social welfare - Taking responsibility within the wider community. Multicultural perspectives. Social consideration of others.
Social obligation - Understanding social obligation. Where am I in society? Progressing in society. Recognising my progression in society
Anti-Social behaviour - Learning what is viewed as anti-social behaviour. The impact of anti-social behaviour. Individual issues. Community issues. Addressing anti-social behaviour
Moral Reasoning - Understanding moral reasoning. Understanding right and wrong. Moral reasoning in practice. Choosing to do the right thing.
Reintegration into society - Awareness of issues of reintegration. Developing an action plan. Goal setting. Resources.
